Jared tracked down Harper in the lobby after the interview ended. She stood at the front window, her expression thoughtful as she stared out.
âHey.â Jared was gentle as he rested a hand on her arm.
Harper arched an eyebrow as she glared. âHey?â
Jared pulled back his fingers and frowned. âI know youâre angry,â he started. âThis isnât what I wanted. I would throw myself on a grenade to keep you from feeling what youâre feeling now. You know that.â
Harperâs expression was neutral as she regarded him. Finally, she folded her arms over her chest and started tapping her foot. âWhat is it you think Iâm angry about?â
The question caught him off guard. âWhat do you mean? Youâre angry because your mother is a suspect.â
âNo. Iâm angry because you didnât tell me my mother was a suspect.â
âI ... you ... whatâs the difference?â Jared was genuinely flummoxed.
âThe difference is that you shouldâve told me that you thought my mother was a murderer.â
Jared balked, his frustration on full display. âI donât think your mother is a murderer. Thatâs not what this is about. I didnât have a choice but to take her in, though. You know that as well as I do. For crying out loud, she was seen â and heard, for that matter â having a fight with Gibbons hours before his death. We canât simply ignore that no matter how much I love you.â
âI donât expect you to ignore it. I also donât expect you to pretend everything is fine and lull me into a false sense of security. You shouldâve told me how things would go down.â
âYou know I couldnât do that.â Jaredâs temper flared despite his unhappiness. âI canât run procedural necessities through you simply because weâre going to be married. Thatâs not how this works.â
âI didnât say you had to run things through me.â
âNo, but youâre acting like it.â Jared went on the offensive because he didnât know what else to do. âYouâre the most important thing in the world to me. You know that. You are not, however, in charge of how I do my job.â
âI donât want to be in charge of your job.â
âWhat do you want?â
âNothing you can give me right now.â Harper was purposely cold as she took a step away from him. âAm I to believe that you will not be arresting my mother for murder tonight?â
âNo. Sheâs not under arrest. We will probably have to question her again.â
âWell, then ... I guess that means you have more interviews to conduct this afternoon, huh?â
âWe do. Weâre heading back to Junior next. It seems he mightâve left a little information out when we questioned him earlier.â
âI hope you find what youâre looking for.â
Jared was not a fan of her remote tone. âWhere are you going?â
âAre you asking for my official or unofficial itinerary?â
Jared wanted to shake her. âPlease donât punish me for doing my job.â
She stared at him for a long beat, her expression unreadable. Finally, she just shook her head. âI have things I have to do.
